Welcome to the wiki of Apotheoun!

In the wake of an apocalypse came aeons of unrest, and within that chaos emerges man. Desperate was the unwilling war they waged in civilizing the lands when language was scarce. As civilization emerged, memories became myth and society replaced the warbands of old. Few among the outsiders remember what caused the apocalypse, and those who do are either unaware of mankind or simply unwilling to share the truth with the young races of men who carved small pockets of relative stability into a world of bloody savagery. Sheltered now is the world they inhabit, knowing only their own hostility and that of the rare intruder brazen enough to face them. Small are they in this vast world, but powerful when mobilized even on a small scale.

Apotheoun is a dark and humanist fantasy setting set in a subtle post-apocalypse. Magic is scarce, its discovery slow and entirely incidental. While many fringe ways exist that humans and others can access its boundless power, the most common of them is the Spellsword, whose training is more religious and arcane than it is directly magical. Intense, culturally distinct methods of cultivation are utilized by the countless independent manifestations of this art across the world to achieve quite minor results compared to the imagined grand magics of yore.

War between men is bloody and physical with the most common forms of magic being relatively personal in their scale, and their impact low in relation to the sheer scale of dedication a blade must have to their craft to grasp even the most simple of manifestations. Gunpowder is crude and firearms are new during the 'modern' times which the story primarily occurs. Alchemy and magic alike have found their ways into the art of gunpowder, and some of those most brilliant acts of warfare are ones achieved through this union.

Chief among the great powers of the world is the Ascadian Empire, though many could oppose them given some motivation, as could some internally. Ascadia enjoys a tenuous golden age despite being frequently beset by political and supernatural turmoils, with a society rich in its diversity of cultures and practices which regardless unite under the almost mythical identity of the Ascadic project.

Work on this is rather slow and infrequent compared to the ongoing retcons that may have occurred in the efforts to polish this setting for its future. Still eager to browse? Start here using this button to see some of the potentially canonical articles half-prepared already!
