Known traditionally by its Ascadian name, Vessana, Veregend was founded shortly after the [[Civil Collapse]] and the following corrosion of the capacity for the Branch Colonies to govern themselves without [[Government of Ascadia|Imperial]] support. Without the troubles of Ascadian oversight, the local Post-Vagians, specifically [[Hergunga|Hergungan]] and [[Orthenians|Orthenian]] peoples, undertook a project of self-governance under two notable figures, the Bandit-Thane Svegeric and the so-called "Ruinous Bureaucrat" Alessio Coba.

== Vessana ==
Under the leadership of a young Prince Alessandro VI came a colonial expedition numbering some 700 men, 200 of which were well trained and well-equipped imperial knights. What should've been a battle between a weak colonial force and a native uprising was more of a violent culling and consolidation. The old central settlement, named Veregget by the local Orthenians who occupied it, fell in the tail end of a pitched battle that devolved into a route behind the earth-backed wooden walls that protected it, a panicked route that was followed by storming cavalry cutting down any who came between them as the pushed past the gates unopposed. Prince Alessandro VI, feeling accomplished by his escapade had left one of his companions behind to manage the blood-soaked ruined without much for guidance. An act of political acceleration for prince Alessandro, who was anticipating a conflict with his sibling Umberto III on the eve of their fathers death, had turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. Vessana was notoriously unprofitable, founded solely due to a young imperialist firebands desire to prove himself. For the entire length of Vessana's long existence it has not once profited Ascadia itself, nor has it brought about any unique opportunities. The outskirts of the territory, in the hinterlands between the distant branch colony of Serrul and Vessana, was the scattered claims of Hergungan Bandit-Jarls. A people who often contested the powerful imperial patrols that secured Vessana in spite of its desire to fall off the map. It wasn't until the Civil Collapse that large numbers of Imperial forces and bureaucrats were withdrawn to support the [[Alta Provvidenza|Imperial Core]] during the climactic events unfolding.

== Ruinous Bureaucrat ==
With the Civil Collapse came the withdrawal of the Knights and Bureaucrats, leaving a single man to manage the inevitable collapse of the feeble colony, Alessio Coba, a fraternal knight whose position, Grandmaster of the Knights Agricultural, left him the fourth most important person in Vessana, with the fifth most important holding no civil power. To ensure at least a fighting chance for Vessana's continued existence, he was left behind the govern. Despite being the fourth most important man, he always held disproportionate power. He was often the one to broker deals with the Bandit-Jarls to ensure the safety of locals, and he managed the only thing the colony exported, food. Within a day of his elevation to Imperial Governor, he brokered a deal with a powerful Bandit-Jarl, a Hergungan who led a large troupe of powerful clans, their collective size numbering in the thousands. Alessio promised this Bandit-Jarl, Svegeric all of Vessana and its peripherals in exchange for splitting the power. Alessio wanted to handle the money, and Svegeric wanted to handle the state.

== Veregend ==
Upon claiming the title of "Jarl of Vessana", self-prescribed by himself and validated by Alessio, Svegeric went to renaming the land Veregend and welcoming all the displaced peoples to settle within. All the bounties were cleared, all the debts were forgiven, and all the land was distributed, as much as was needed for the people to tend the land and the beasts to tend the fields. Among the eastern powers, those who still hope to be known as Ascadia once the dust of the Civil Collapse settles and a new emperor is found, Veregend is referred to as a "Bandit State", though to call it such is an insult. Veregend, with the help of Alessio Coba, seamlessly implemented its own system of taxation and government structure divorced from the Ascadian one, though obviously based off it. Marauders often supported by Veregend itself pillage the frontiers of their land, targeting specifically the branch colonies who seceded from Ascadia but maintain an "Ascadian Identity" rather than a Post-Vagian identity. Veregend is the first of the [[Vagian States]] to arise in the peripheries of the collapsing empire. while smaller than most of the others that rose up and far less capable of expanding its borders it is still regarded as a state by its peers

Far off in the [[Ascadian Imperial Periphery|Imperial Periphery]] exists the realms of the Marchesi, a small, dense cluster of counties nominally subservient to the city of Verana and its Bureaucrats but maintaining a large degree of autonomy vested in The Marchesi themselves; allowing them to levy taxes or raise armies of their own accord. In the county of Aerbul, under the iron-fisted rule of Biriccio Stirma is the Menaçça of the woods. The Menaçça were a band of well-armed and ravenous bandits which once ravaged the scattered imperial colonies in the Northwest, reaching as far as the settled lands of the [[Porto Salgueiro|Salgueri]] where they menaced the hilly north of the province while the pastures were vacated for the winter months. Through their decades of terror they amassed a great fortune of weapons and armors. Upon the appointment of Biriccio's father, Osco, the bandits were reigned in, consolidated into a variety of military garrisons ruled by appointed castellans who oversaw them. Under the rule of both Osco and his wicked son, the banditry became organized and formalized, nonexistent tariffs, head taxes, and tolls were implemented across Aerbul, their violence backed up by the legal authority of the Castellans who managed them and profited off their terror. Despite the uptick in robbery the peoples of Aerbul seemingly rejoiced, welcoming the stabilizing hand of the Stirma family without realizing that the "protective taxes" they were paying were imposed by the same men who years prior had simply enacted these taxes through violent raids and force.

== Castellans of the Woods and Curas Pradairo ==
Without the Castellans of the woods, the Menaçça would be nothing more than scattered bands of pillagers. The Castellans themselves are the greatest profiteers off these thuggish enforcers they protect, collecting shares of their thievery upwards of 70% depending on their authority and intimidation among them. Curas Pradairo, a powerful Castellan hailing from Porto Salguero, is often regarded as the firmest of the Castellans of the woods. Unlike his peers, he has fully organized his bandits into a group of powerful mercenaries and skirmishers, raiding into the territories of his fellow Castellans to compete for dominance, and then selling their services for a premium once they've exhausted their will to contend. Curas maintains the largest castle of the Castellans of the Woods, and the largest standing army of over 500 Menaçça, 200 Salgueri bandits, and potentially a thousand or more decently trained conscripts who tend the sparse fields of his subdomain outside of their military service.

[[Cecco Fania]], Herus of the [[Legio Cacciare]]
In a system as rigid as that of the [[Ascadian Inquisition|Inquisition]], men are bound to flake off the whole and take it upon themselves to enact any sort of change they can make, Giam Alghieri has embodied this virtue since his induction into the [[Ordo di Santa Cassia]] as a youth. Disenfranchised by the nature of the state’s religious apparatus, he struck back at them in silence before finally betraying his order to become a rogue. Giam had been responsible for various terroristic attacks across [[Ascadia]]

== Early Life ==
House Alghieri, forged by fire in their eastward retreat over the generations had finally settled in the fertile heartland of [[Duchy of Corbaglia|Corbaglia]] at request of a young king [[Alessandro IV of House Tizzone|Alessandro IV]] of [[House Tizzone]]. The family, then comprised of Giam’s parents Giovanna and Corso Alghieri alongside his uncle Chiovo, had been decimated by the western conflicts raging through the County of Cione, their land and property seized by renegade knights well before the Ascadian League could levy support from the interior provinces. House Alghieri, being one of the few loyalist houses in Cione was favored by the King, and gifted a generous grape bearing parcel of farmland seized from a supporter of the [[Cioni Revolt]] by the Inquisition. Giam was born barely a year after this settling, and was immediately favored by the local institutions in the small city of [[Sassano]], wherein he was inducted at the age of 8 into the Spellsword Order, Il Ordo di Santa Cassia, which he excelled within.

“The realm of Virtues, as they put it. A realm of twisted ideals and warped minds bearing a beast of the same name. Nobody knows when or how it came to be. The polar north, defined by the solstices and their relation to the sun and moon. But far worse things dwell within that cold wasteland than just long nights and endless mornings.”

- [[Giam Alghieri]], Traitor to the [[Ordo di Santa Cassia]]
Acethalys is a realm defined by its ruler, Acethalys, whose name is that of its own home. Little is known of the horror that bears its fangs against the virtues of men and beasts alike. Some say Acethalys is the north, others say acethalys is a realm contained away from the world itself. [[Ashifumu|Ashifuman]] colonists have occupied one of the few northerly islands within this Acethylan span, [[Xirath]], which is occupied by a group known as the [[Fae]]. Various other islands exist, though their habitation is unknown, it can be assumed the [[Beasts of Virtue]] run free across many of these polar lands without men to harry them.

== Acethalys, in Flesh ==
Few have seen the great beast of virtue firsthand, though the Fae of Xirath worship it. They speak of Acethalys as a lord of many faces and personas, whose form shifts and warps to facilitate its absolute rule. In one hand he wields a large halberd, and in the other a silvered skull from which he drinks his endless wine. It speaks in voices that coalesce and consume, with words that coax you to actions unbecoming of your own ideals. Acethalys is a tempter of the most vile virtues. Under its thumb, men become wayward and cruel.

== Acethalys, in Realms Forgotten ==
Outside of the polar north, but seemingly fully contained within is Acethalys, the realm which the horror of the same name resides. The Fae alone has provided knowledge of this land, it’s many vacant meadows devoid of life as towering windowless spires of castles erupt from the earth before giving way to colossal palatial halls occupied by the [[Purveyors of Acethalys]], the tips of their spiraling towers giving way to great metal chains that constrain the floating fortress of Acethalys itself from soaring off into the ebbing nightmare that roils overhead in this forgotten realm.
An easy solution is to use the {{tl|poem quote}} template instead of {{tag|blockquote}}. This is effectively the same as using the {{xtag|poem}} tag inside {{code|lang=html|code=
}}, which converts line breaks to {{code|lang=html|code=
}} tags:
{{markup
|
<poem>

To markup actual paragraphs within block quotations, entire blank lines can be used between them, which will convert to {{code|lang=html|code=
...
}} tags:
Note that it may be necessary to put a line break in the wikitext before <nowiki>
and after
</nowiki> in order for the paragraphs to render with the intended separation. (This also makes the wikitext easier to read.)

This paragraph style also works with {{tl|blockquote}}, which is a replacement for {{xtag|blockquote}} that also has parameters to make formatting of the attribution more convenient and consistent.

Blockquote and templates that call it, and are indented with colon (:), bulleted with asterisk (*), or numbered with number (#), will generate errors and incorrectly display anything after a newline character.
== Usage ==
{{tlc|{{BASEPAGENAME}}}} adds a [[block quotation]] to an article page.

This is easier to type and is more wiki-like than the equivalent [[HTML]] {{code|lang=html|code=
...
}} tags, and has additional pre-formatted attribution parameters for author and source (though these are not usually used in articles; {{crossreference|see {{section link||Reference citations}}, below}}).

'''Note:''' Block quotes do {{em|not}} normally contain quotation marks {{crossreference|(see [[MOS:BLOCKQUOTE]])}}.
== Parameters ==
=== Parameter list ===

{{Blockquote
| text      =
| author    =
| title     =
| source    =
| character =
| multiline =
| class     =
| style     =
}}

See also section [[#TemplateData]].

=== Quoted text ===
{{para|text}} a.k.a. {{para|1}}—The material being quoted, without quotation marks around it. It is always safest to name this parameter (rather than use an unnamed positional parameter), because, otherwise, any inclusion of a [[Template:=|non-escaped "=" character]] (e.g., in a URL in a source citation) will break the template.

=== Displayed attribution ===
These parameters are for {{em|displaying}} attribution information below the quote; this should not be confused with citing a source {{crossreference|(see {{section link||Reference citations}}, below)}}. These parameters are entirely optional, and are usually used with famous quotations, not routine block quotations, which are usually sourced at the end of the introductory line immediately before the quotation, with a normal <syntaxhighlight lang="html" inline><ref>...</ref></syntaxhighlight> tag.

{{para|author}} a.k.a. {{para|2}} – optional author/speaker attribution information that will appear below the quotation, and preceded with an attribution dash.

{{para|title}} a.k.a. {{para|3}} – optional title of the work the quote appears in, to display below the quotation. This parameter immediately follows the output of {{para|author}} (and an auto-generated comma), if one is provided. It does not auto-italicize. Major works (books, plays, albums, feature films, etc.) should be italicized; minor works (articles, chapters, poems, songs, TV episodes, etc.) go in quotation marks {{crossreference|(see [[MOS:TITLES]])}}. Additional citation information can be provided in a fourth parameter, {{para|source}}, below, which will appear after the title.

{{para|source}} a.k.a. {{para|4}} – optionally used for additional source information to display, after {{para|title}}, like so: {{code|lang="wikitext"|code={{!}}title="The Aerodynamics of Shaved Weasels" {{!}}source=''Perspectives on Mammal Barbering'', 2016}}; a comma will be auto-generated between the two parameters. If {{para|source}} is used without {{para|title}}, it simply acts as {{para|title}}. (This parameter was added primarily to ease conversion from misuse of the [[pull quote]] template {{tlx|Quote frame}} for block quotation, but it may aid in cleaner meta-data implementation later.)

{{para|character}} a.k.a. {{para|char}} – to attribute fictional speech to a fictional character, {{em|with}} other citation information. Can also be used to attribute real speech to a specific speaker among many, e.g. in a roundtable/panel transcript, a band interview, etc. This parameter outputs "[{{Var|Character's name}}], in" after the attribution dash and before the output of the parameters above, thus one or more of those parameters must also be supplied. If you need to cite a fictional speaker in an article about a single work of fiction, where repeating the author and title information would be redundant, you can just use the {{para|author}} parameter instead of {{para|character}}.

Technically, all citation information can be given in a single parameter, as in: {{code|lang="wikitext"|code={{!}}source=Anonymous interview subject, in Jane G. Arthur, "The Aerodynamics of Shaved Weasels", ''Perspectives on Mammal Barbering'' (2016), Bram Xander Yojimbo (ed.)}} But this is a bit messy, and will impede later efforts to generate metadata from quotation attribution the way we are already doing with source citations. This is much more usable:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
|character=Anonymous interview subject
|author=Jane G. Arthur
|title="The Aerodynamics of Shaved Weasels"
|source=''Perspectives on Mammal Barbering'' (2016), Bram Xander Yojimbo (ed.)
</syntaxhighlight>
Later development can assign a CSS
class
and so forth to these separate parameters, upon which scripts would be able to operate (e.g. to look up things in WikiQuote).

=== Rarely used technical parameters ===
* {{anchor|multiline}}{{para|multiline}} – keep forced linebreaks in output.{{pb}}''Notes:''
** Will only be applied if at least one of these other parameters or its aliases is not empty (including implicit, unnamed parameters):{{pb}}{{para|author}}, {{para|title}}, {{para|source}}, or {{para|character}}.
** The value does not matter, as long it is not empty. Using a so called speaking parameter (such as
true
or
yes
) is highly recommended. Avoid values that can surprise users (e.g.
false
or
no
).
* {{para|style}} – allows specifying additional [[Help:Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] styles ({{em|not}} classes) to apply to the {{code|lang=html|code=
...
}} element. {{Crossreference|(See [[#Nested quotations]], below, for the most common use case.)}}
* {{para|class}} – allows specifying additional HTML classes to apply to the same element.

== Reference citations ==
{{anchor|Attribution|reason=Old section name}}
A [[WP:Citing sources|reference citation]] can be placed before the quote, after the quote, or in the {{para|source}} parameter:
{{bulleted list
|{{tick}} {{stronggood|Typical use:}} In the regular-prose introduction to the quotation, when a quotation is given without the displayed {{para|author}}, {{para|title}}, or {{para|source}} parameters: <syntaxhighlight lang="html" inline>According to Pat Doe, in "Underwater Basketweaving Tips" (2015):<ref>...</ref> {{blockquote |text=Quoted material.}}</syntaxhighlight>
|At the end of the quotation, when a quotation is given without the displayed {{para|author}}, {{para|title}}, or {{para|source}} parameters, and placement before the quote isn't appropriate (e.g. because the material immediately before the quote isn't cited to the same source or introduces multiple quotes from different sources: <syntaxhighlight lang="html" inline>Pat Doe and Chris Foo took opposing positions: {{blockquote |text=Doe's Quoted material.<ref>...</ref>}} {{blockquote |text=Foo's Quoted material.<ref>...</ref>}}</syntaxhighlight>
|After the {{para|source}} value (if a value is given for the {{para|source}} parameter other than the <syntaxhighlight lang="html" inline><ref>...</ref></syntaxhighlight> itself):<syntaxhighlight lang="html" inline>One expert noted in 2015: {{blockquote |text=Quoted material. |author=Pat Doe |source="Underwater Basketweaving Tips" (2015)<ref>...</ref>}}</syntaxhighlight>
|{{xmark}} {{strongbad|Deprecated:}} <s>After the quoted person's name in {{para|author}}, or after the work's title in {{para|title}}, when a {{para|source}} parameter is not being added: <syntaxhighlight lang="html" inline>As noted in "Underwater Basketweaving Tips" (2015): {{blockquote |text=Quoted material. |author=Pat Doe<ref>...</ref>}}</syntaxhighlight></s>{{pb}}{{A note}} Please avoid this format, as it will pollute the author or title metadata with non-author or non-title information.
}}

Please do not place the citation in a {{para|author}} or {{para|source}} parameter by itself, as it will produce a nonsensical attribution line that looks like this:
{{pb}}{{in5}}— {{dummy reference}}{{pb}}
Please also do not put it just outside the {{tlf|blockquote}} template, as this will cause a:
{{pb}}{{in5}}{{dummy reference}}{{pb}}on a line by itself.

== Limitations ==
{{anchor|Restrictions|reason=Old section name}}
If you do not provide text, the template generates a parser error message, which will appear in red text in the rendered page.

If any parameter's actual value contains an [[equals sign]] (
=
), you {{strong|must}} use a named parameter (e.g.
|text="E=MC2" is a formula everyone knows but few understand
, not a blank-name positional parameter. The text before the equals sign gets misinterpreted as a named parameter otherwise. Be wary of URLs, which frequently contain this character. Named parameters are always safer, in this and other templates.

If any parameter's actual value contains characters used for wiki markup syntax (such as [[vertical bar|pipe]], [[brackets]], single quotation marks, etc.), you may need to escape it. See {{tlx|!}} and friends.

=== Next to right-floated boxes ===
{{As of|2015|09|post=,}} the text of a block quotation may rarely overflow (in Firefox or other Gecko browsers) a right-floated item (e.g. a {{tlx|Listen}} box, when that item is below another right-floated item of a fixed size that is narrower. In Safari and other Webkit browsers (and even more rarely in Chrome/Chromium) the same condition can cause the block quotation to be pushed downward. Both of these problems can be fixed by either:
# removing the sizing on the upper item and letting it use its default size (e.g. removing
{{var|###}}x{{var|###}}px
sizing or {{para|upright}} from a right-floated image above a wider right-floated object that is being overflowed by quotation text; or
# using {{para|style|{{code|lang=css|code=overflow:inherit;}}}} in the quotation template.
There may be other solutions, and future browser upgrades may eliminate the issue. It arises at all because of the <syntaxhighlight lang="css" inline>blockquote {overflow: hidden;}</syntaxhighlight> CSS declaration in [[Mediawiki:Common.css]], which itself works around other, more common display problems. A solution that fixes {{em|all}} of the issues is unknown at this time.

=== Vanishing quotes ===
In rare layout cases, e.g. when quotes are sandwiched between userboxes, a quotation may appear blanked out, in some browsers. The workaround for this problem is to add {{para|style|{{code|lang=css|code=overflow:inherit;}}}} to such an instance of the template.

=== Line breaks ===
This template sets a text style which might ignore one blank line, and so the template must be ended with a break (newline) or the next blank line might be ignored. Otherwise, beware inline, as:
{{in5}}text here {{tlf|blockquote|this is quoted}} More text here
spans a blank line, unless a {{tlf|blockquote|...}} is ended with a line break, then the next blank line might be ignored and two paragraphs joined.

{{Blockquote paragraphs}}

=== Nested quotations ===
The {{code|lang=html|code=
...
}} element has styles that change the font size: on desktop, text is smaller; on mobile, it is larger. This change is relative to the enclosing context, meaning that if you quote from a source that itself uses a block quotation, you'll find that the inner quotation is either really tiny and hard to read, or really large and barely fits on the screen. To fix this issue, add the parameter {{para|style|{{code|lang=css|font-size:inherit;}}}} on any inner {{tlf|blockquote}} templates.

{{Documentation subpage}}

This is a complex template designed to make it easy to write out lines of [[dialogue]]. '''This template ''cannot'' be
subst:
'd'''. The template can handle most standard formats of writing dialogue, and can be indented, bulleted or numbered.

{{tl|Dialogue}} facilitates the writing of [[dialogue]] in a standard format.

==Syntax==
This is how to write the template in [[wikitext]] onto your article:

{{dialogue
|short=full
|short=full
|short=full
...
|Character|Speech
|Character|Speech
|Character|Speech
...
}}

These parameters are explained more fully below.

==Parameters==

'''Named parameters specify name shortcuts. They are all optional.''' They are placed at the top of the template call, like this:

{{dialogue
|short=full
|short=full
|short=full
...

Name shortcuts apply to your main dialogue text. If you use a shortcut specified here for a character name, then the full name will be replaced for it.

Named parameters of the form "
mood1
", "
mood2
", "
mood3
", etc., up to "
mood10
", specify moods for the corresponding line number (e.g. "
mood1
" specifies line 1). They are placed in a line like this:

...
|Character|Speech|mood1=angry
|Character|Speech|mood2=quiet
|Character|Speech|mood3=ecstatic
...

Positional parameters form the text of the dialogue (i.e. any line not containing an "
=
" will be construed as part of the dialogue.

:;
Parameter 1
''(required)'' : Character name speaking
:;
Parameter 2
''(optional)'' : Line to speak
:;
Parameter 3
''(optional)'' : Next character
:;
Parameter 4
''(optional)'' : Next line
:;
Parameter 5
''(optional)'' : Next character
:;
Parameter 6
''(optional)'' : Next line
:;
Parameter 7
''(optional)'' : so on...

This extends for 10 lines at maximum. After that, unfortunately the template will have to be manually called again from the code.

Note: if any character is called "
action
" then that line will be construed as an action line. It still counts as a ''line'' nonetheless.

==Examples==
Here is an example of a full template usage:

{{dialogue
|officer=Officer
|chicolini=Chicolini
|firefly=[[Rufus T. Firefly|Firefly]]
|officer|Chicolini, you're charged with high treason, and if found guilty, you will be shot.
|chicolini|I object.
|officer|Oh, you object? On what grounds?|mood3=derisively
|chicolini|I couldn't think of anything else to say.
|firefly|Objection sustained.|mood5=interrupting
|officer|Your Excellency, you sustained the objection?!|mood6=surprised
|firefly|Sure, I couldn't think of anything else to say, either. Why don't you object?
}}

The above would generate:

{{dialogue
|officer=Officer
|chicolini=Chicolini
|firefly=[[Rufus T. Firefly|Firefly]]
|officer|Chicolini, you're charged with high treason, and if found guilty, you will be shot.
|chicolini|I object.
|officer|Oh, you object? On what grounds?|mood3=derisively
|chicolini|I couldn't think of anything else to say.
|firefly|Objection sustained.|mood5=interrupting
|officer|Your Excellency, you sustained the objection?!|mood6=surprised
|firefly|Sure, I couldn't think of anything else to say, either. Why don't you object?
}}

The below code demonstrates examples of extended use:

{{dialogue
|george=George
|rachel=Rachel

|action|Enter: George and Rachel
|george|Good morrow dearest Rachel!|mood2=happy
|action|Rachel turns to see him
|rachel|Oh, George, it's you!
|george|
|rachel|Why won't you say anything?!|mood6=worried
|action|Enter: Guards
|Guards|We are announcing George's arrest!
|rachel|Oh my!|mood9=horrified
|action|George is dragged away.
}}

The above would generate:

{{dialogue
|george=George
|rachel=Rachel

|action|Enter: George and Rachel
|george|Good morrow dearest Rachel!|mood2=happy
|action|Rachel turns to see him
|rachel|Oh, George, it's you!
|george|
|rachel|Why won't you say anything?!|mood6=worried
|action|Enter: Guards
|Guards|We are announcing George's arrest!
|rachel|Oh my!|mood9=horrified
|action|George is dragged away.
}}

===Notes===

You can number, bullet or indent your dialogue:

{{dialogue|Alice|Hello.|Bob|Good morning!}}

{{dialogue|Alice|Hello.|Bob|Good morning!}}

#{{dialogue|Alice|Hello.|Bob|Good morning!}}
#{{dialogue|Carol|What lovely weather we're having.|Dan|I quite agree.}}

#{{dialogue|Alice|Hello.|Bob|Good morning!}}
#{{dialogue|Carol|What lovely weather we're having.|Dan|I quite agree.}}

*{{dialogue
|angel=Fortitude
|angel|I am an angel!|Crowd|We don't believe you!}}
*{{dialogue
|angel=Fortitude
|angel|But I'm being quite serious!|Crowd|Too bad for you then!}}

*{{dialogue
|angel=Fortitude
|angel|I am an angel!|Crowd|We don't believe you!}}
*{{dialogue
|angel=Fortitude
|angel|But I'm being quite serious!|Crowd|Too bad for you then!}}

You will get the odd spacing error (e.g. "Speech
<space>
") if you lay out your dialogue on multiple lines. If you need 11 or more lines, you must split the template up. Otherwise you'll see this:

{{dialogue|Line 10|21=Demonstration}}

{{tl|Verse transliteration-translation}} produces a three-column layout meant to contain the original text of a given poem, an English transliteration, and an English translation, in that order, with optional headings. Language and transliteration data is automatically added in accordance with the {{param|lang}}, and the columns break into a vertical layout in viewports below 900 pixels in width. ==Notes==
* For a two-column layout, without a separate transliteration, please use {{tl|verse translation}}.
* Please do not use this template for long sections of prose. Whether or not doing so works at present, any such usage may complicate future changes to the template.
* If you want to use non-English text in any of the headings, remember to enclose it in a {{tl|lang}} template.
* With headings, the text beneath the hedings will be indented, while the headings themselves will not be. Without headings, the entire template will be indented. Additional indentation can be achieved with {{tl|block indent}}
A template for quoting poems, song lyrics, and other things that have frequent line breaks and other things that would generally be ignored in standard wiki formatting. Based on {{tl|Blockquote}}; see there for further usage details.
==Example==
{{Markup|
Note that while the version above using {{tl|Blockquote}} may appear to work in some browsers, it does not do so consistently in all of them. Use {{tag|poem}} – or a template like {{tlx|Poem quote}} that implements it – around material that requires that whitespace formatting be preserved as in the original, such as poems and interlinear glosses. Due to limitations of how MediaWiki parses wikimarkup and HTML, attempts to do this by just inserting blank lines and extra spaces will not work. This is true of all block elements.
(Technical note: Although {{tl|Poem quote}} uses the
Tag:#poem
markup rather than using {{tag|poem|o}}, it is functionally the same.)
